Communication

Deaf and Hard of Hearing people may use different methods of communicating, depending on what is most suitable for them. Some ways of communicating are:

Auslan - Australian Sign Language

Lipreading - using hearing, watching lip patterns, facial expressions and body language and an understanding of the context to understand speech

TTY - Telephone Typewriter - a keyboard with a screen that can be used via the phoneline with another TTY-user

msn etc - live internet chat (typed conversations)

National Relay Service (NRS) - calls from a TTY or msn relayed via an operator to a standard phone

oovoo, skype etc - internet programs used for chat or video conversations
